4th Annual Short Course Intensive: Introduction to Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Health

This course requires formal enrolment as a Monash Student either in the Graduate Certificate/Diploma/Masters stream or as a single Unit. Numbers are strictly limited. A small number of places may be available for participation as a professional development short course.

Synopsis

The World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine (WADEM) recommends that all health professionals should have formal training in the core topics of emergency preparedness and disaster health. This course will provide an overview and develop core skills in this rapidly expanding and important field. Based on previously successful formats, and improved with feedback from last year's participants, this course will include lectures and interactive case study discussions of recent major events to develop understanding, critical analysis and appropriate skills. Guidance will be provided on accessing resources.

Objectives

By the conclusion of this short course, participants will enable to:

  • describe the international trends in disaster epidemiology, and the effects on health, with a specific focus on Australia, Oceania and Asia;
  • outline the impact of political and social context of disasters;
  • outline contemporary models relating to the science of the health response to disasters;
  • outline the state, national and international relationships involved in emergency preparedness, disaster health and international humanitarian aid;
  • describe the multi‑disciplinary approach required in managing the health response to disasters;
  • demonstrate core clinical, emergency management and public health skills in emergency preparedness and disaster health; and
  • enhance their ability to perform in their role as community‑based emergency health professionals.

Keynote Speakers

Invited international and national leaders with expertise on selected topics will be keynote speakers in this dynamic and interactive program.

Who should attend?

This graduate level short course intensive will be ideal for professionals of any discipline who are interested, or involved in, contributing to the multi disciplinary health response to major events, which actually or potentially threaten the health status of their community. Applications will be welcomed from individuals who may not hold a Bachelor’s Degree but have significant professional experience in this or a related field.

Cancellation Policy

At least 5 working days notice is needed if you are unable to attend the Forum event. Cancellations made less than 5 days prior to the seminar start date will be eligible for a 50% refund on the seminar fee. An alternative colleague may be substituted, if the need arises.
